My "Honors" class requires more of you. Not only will we cover concepts in science, you will learn skills to make you a better student, a better citizen, and you will be better prepared to compete in a global job market!

Honors Requirements: “6 C’s of Success" (according to Mr. Beals;)

  1. Content – Your understanding of the topics and concepts taught in class.
  2. Communication – The ability to share your knowledge and ideas with others.
  3. Creativity – "Imagination is more important than knowledge..." -Albert Einstein
  4. Critical Thinking – Solve real-world issues through investigation and exploration.
  5. Cooperation – The ability to work well with others.
  6. Community – Understand how your actions affect the community and how the Earth Science content relates to the area around Billings, MT.

 

-You will be required to show that you have Mastery in each of the “6 C’s of Success” in order to earn a grade of mastery for this course (4E).

Classroom Policies

 

Late Work:

·         ALL late work will be penalized 50%

·         Late work is only accepted 1-week after assigned

 

Absence Policy:

When absent, it is the student’s responsibility to get the appropriate make-up work from his/her teacher.

·         Student has 1 day for each day missed to make up class work if absence is excused

·         If absence is unexcused, credit for make up work is at the teacher’s discretion

·         Tests & class make-up work will be completed before or after school

o   Bronc Café (lunchtime remediation) can be assigned or by student request

Turning in Late work/ Absent work:

·         All late/absent work will be turned into the TOP bin on Mr. Beals' desk

·         Absent work must have the following on the top of the page or it will be treated as late work (50% off)

·         Write "ABSENT" at the top of the page and the following:

·         Name, Class period, Name of Assignment, Date

 

Emergency Passes:

Students will receive 1 emergency pass for the semester. Emergency passes can be used for bathroom and water breaks or for homework. (The student will not incur the late work penalty for an assignment that is one day late—however, work must be completed to use the emergency pass—it is not a replacement for work). 

 

*Emergency passes are to be used at the teacher’s discretion.*

 

Classroom Expectations:

1.    Come to class on time and prepared for learning. (Bring: 3-ring binder, paper, textbook, pen/pencil)

2.     Work hard.

3.     Respect the people, the place, and the procedures.

4.     Contribute to a positive and safe environment.

5.     Act responsibly and accept consequences for actions.

 

Consequences:

1.       Individual teacher conference.

2.      Parent, teacher, student conference/communication.

3.      Referral to administration.

 

 



Why Earth Science?!

 

 

Welcome to Earth Science class! By studying Earth, its composition, history, and the processes that shape it, you will gain a better understanding of the planet on which you live. Changes in the lithosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere have profound effects on human existence. Knowledge of the solar system and the universe will help you make predictions about Earth and informed decisions about the future of space exploration.

 

By the end of this course, students should be able to;

 

1. Understand the theory of plate tectonics and how it explains the inter-relationship between earthquakes, volcanoes, and sea floor spreading.

 

2. Identify and classify rocks and minerals based on physical and chemical properties and the utilization by humans.

 

3. Describe the geological timeline.

 

4. Collect and analyze data in order to make inferences and predictions about weather patterns.

 

5. Explain the impact of terrestrial, solar, oceanic and atmosphere conditions on global climatic patterns.

 

6. Describe the origin, location, and evolution of stars and their planetary systems in respect to the solar system, the Milky Way, the local galactic group, and the universe.

 

7. Relate how evidence from advanced technology, applied to scientific investigations has dramatically impacted our understanding of the origin, size and evolution of the universe.
